Delaware Center for Justice, Delaware United, ACLU-Delaware, and additional partners from the Coalition for SMART Justice are hosting an art exhibit at Legislative Hall in Dover, DE. The exhibit will feature images created by members of our community who are unable to pay their court fines, high school students from the Design Thinking Academy, who have studied the spiral of civic debt as part of their school curriculum, and Mr. Waverly White, a local artist, impacted by the legal system, whose work has been featured as murals within the prison dedicated to the memory of a correction officer killed in the line of duty.
The exhibit begins at noon. There will be a short debriefing on talking points and then our legislators and legislative aides are invited to join the community to explore the exhibit and discuss pending legislation to require the courts to consider people's ability to pay prior to imposing court fines, and prohibit the courts from suspending the driving privileges and issuing warrants to arrest people who do not pay fines. The press conference will begin at 1:15 pm.
