Illinois Day of Empathy

Women are leading the National Day of Empathy from Chicago to Springfield. We will be covering both major city and state capital.

The Women's Justice Institute (WJI) has partnered with Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) to honor the Day of Empathy by sending a team to the Illinois State Capital in Springfieldto build awareness and support for two very exciting new bills that aim to reduce the harm of incarceration on children and families: The Bill of Rights for Children of the Incarcerated (HB2649) and The Best Interest of the Child Act (HB2444). The team will convene with bill sponsors State Rep Delia Ramirez and State Rep Kelly Cassidy, as well as provide briefings and create Day of Empathy photo opportunities among other state leaders where they will encourage all to sign the Pledge to Choose Empathy.  

In Chicago we will be meeting with State Rep Lashawn Ford. Where the voices of 5 Impacted people will share their stories. Then we load a van with impacted people and supporters drive down to the James R. Thompson Center where we will host a rally to bring national awareness to the National day of Empathy! We ask everyone that we come in contact with to take the Empathy Pledge. We give away buttons and stickers. Then we will speak and facilitate a vision board workshops for the men in division 9, which is the maximum unit inside the Cook County jail.
