I had just given birth to my first child when my first husband was sent to prison. His incarceration ripped apart our family, and left me in dire straits, and drained me emotionally. And all this happened for a non-violent drug-related crime. I couldn’t believe the lack of logic in addressing crime. That’s why I decided to become a criminal-defense attorney and look for better solutions to help, not hurt, communities. Jessica is a human rights attorney who began her career representing California death row inmates in their appeals. She now oversees DreamCorps #cut50 initiative to end mass incarceration.  She was elected to the Mill Valley City Council in November, 2013, becoming the youngest ever elected official in Marin County.
